History of the Department

Prof. R.M. Gyandzhetsyan began to teach Phthisiatry as a course in Yerevan Medical Institute in 1947, later, since 1950 it was taught at the Department of Facultative Therapy (associate professor T.M. Babayan and Ye. P. Stamboltsyan).

Prof. G.G. Karapetyan founded the Department of Tuberculosis in Yerevan State Medical Institute in 1967. Prof E.T. Karapetyan headed the Department from 1972 till 1993.

Prof M.D. Safaryan has been supervising the Department of Phthisiopulmonology of Yerevan State Medical University since 1994. At the same time she is the Director of Republican TB Dispensary – LTD and the Chairman of Association of Phthisiatrists of Armenia.

By the President’s Decree of RA M.D. Safaryan was awarded the title '' Honoured Doctor'' on the occasion of the 20th jubilee of Independence of the Republic of Armenia.

Education


Phthisiօլօgy is taught on the 5th year of study on the faculties of General Medicine and Military Medicine.

The teaching process is conducted as a 5-day modules (30 hours, 1.5 credits). Phthisiology is also included into the program in Master’s Degree course on specialities «General medicine» (as a 5-day module, 45 hours, 1.5 credits), «General Medicine/Military doctor» and «Public Health» – 10-day workshop and practical clinical training (90 hours, 3.0 credits each)

For the Master’s Degree students of the Faculty of Stomatology Phthisiology is an elective discipline ( 10-day module - 90 hours, 3.0. credits).

The 5th year students are taught theoretical bases of phthisiology. Master's Degree module involves the issues of differential diagnostics of TB and other pulmonary diseases, TB complications, combinations of TB with various pathologies, etc. In the process of study students also gain practical skills, deal with patients, participate in making diagnosis and treatment of the patients.

The Department Staff has published numerous manuals and 5 textbooks in the Armenian, Russian and English languages:

Postdiploma Education

Postdiploma education is carried out in Clinical Residency (duration of study is 1 year) and Postdiploma Training Course (duration of study is 3 years).

Clinical base of the department is Republican TB Dispensary-LTD (director – M.D. Safaryan, Doctor of Sciences, professor)


Research Work

The Department was working over the theme «TB and AIDS combination in Armenia» during 2006-2010. The data obtained were summarized in a number of research theses and articles published and reported at various international conferences. The research theme «Polyorgan TB in Armenia» has been the sphere of investigation of the Department staff since 2011.

Under the supervision of the Head of the Department prof. M.D. Safaryan six PhDs on the following topics were maintained:
