Petr K. Yablonsky


In 1982 he graduated with honours from Kishinev State Medical Institute, specializing in general medicine. 
From 1982 to 1984 he had training in the clinical residence of All-USSR Pulmonology Research Institute specializing in surgery, pulmonology and thoracic surgery.
In 1986 he started his post-graduate training in All-USSR Pulmonology Research Institute.
In 1988 he defended his candidate's thesis on Clinical and Morphological Parameters of Bronchiectasis in Sievert-Kartagener Syndrome and Their Specific Management.
From 1989 he worked as a junior, senior, leading researcher, head of intensive care in pulmonology and thoracic surgery of All-USSR Pulmonology Research Institute.
In 1990 he was one of the founders of Municipal Center for Collection, Preservation and Tissue Matching of Donor Organs. His organisational, methodical and research activities in transplantology resulted in the following: successful simultaneous transplantation of the chest part of trachea in 1991 - first in the world; and establishment of the Programme on Pulmonary Transplantation in St. Petersburg University.
In 1994 he organized and became a Head of St. Petersburg Center of Intensive Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery based on the facilities of Municipal Multi-Profile Hospital no. 2.
In 1996 he became a Deputy Chief Doctor of Municipal Multi-Profile Hospital no. 2. and on its facilities he organised St. Petersburg Research Center of Intensive Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery.
In 1999 he defended his doctor's thesis under title of Transplantation of Isolated Lung (experimental and clinical trial), which was the first research paper in this field in Russia and it was a prologue for its implementation.
In 2006 under the command of Prof. Yablonsky and with his direct involvement the bilateral consecutive transplantation of lungs was performed in for the first time in Russia; in February 2007 the Russian Ministry of Health and Social Development awarded Prof. Yablonsky with the Diploma of the Winner in All-Russia Contest of the Best Doctor of Year in the nomination of the Best Surgeon for 2006. 
In 2001 he became Head of newly organized Hospital Surgery Department of St. Petersburg University.
Since 2005 he has been working as Chief Surgeon of Health Committee of St. Petersburg Government.
In 2006 he organized and became head of High Medical Technologies Institute by St. Petersburg University.
Since 2009 he has been Dean of Medical Faculty of St. Petersburg University.
In May 2009 he was appointed to the Director's position of St. Petersburg Phthisiopulmonology Research Institute by the Russian Ministry of Health, paying special attention to tuberculosis control in the Russian Federation.
Since 2010 Prof. Yablonsky has been Chief Non-Resident Expert in Phthisiology (till 2013) and Thoracic Surgery of the Russian Ministry of Health.
